What "Luxe Grunge" Looks Like

"Luxe Grunge." Sounds a bit like an oxymoron, right? That was my reaction too. Anyone who is familiar with the epic fashion movement made popular in the 90's by the likes of musicians, like Kurt Cobain and celebs like Johnny Depp, Kate Moss, knows that the look was, at the time, the epitome of frugality and distress.

Grunge was far more than a fashion trend. It was a rugged lifestyle adopted by the angst ridden, youth sub-culture, often  associated with: beanies, "thrift shop chic", alternative rock music, skateboarding (love a skaterboi), the term "Gen X," and what appeared to be an aversion to soap and shampoo.

It was one of the most significant trickle up fashion movements since the 80's Punk statement. This style revolution was the catalyst for my interest in thrifting (for clothes I'd actually wear in public), upcycling: crafting clothes and jewelry out of sweaters and building materials (ask anyone from my high school class- I was the resident weirdo), layering (my secret weapon for creating a near season-less wardrobe),  and all things Nirvana, Green Day and Smashing Pumpkins. I hope I'm not dating myself here. No matter, "Age ain't nothing but a number."  Thankfully, my encounter with this lifestyle planted the seed for a lifetime of exploration of, and an affinity for "the other," the counter to mainstream, the alternative.

Quick Recap:

The good news is the look, or key elements of it, are again becoming significant in mainstream fashion and design (yay!). Of course, as with any resurgence, it has been re-branded with a fresh moniker for mass consumption (also a great marketing tool to attract the newbies, who will no doubt assume Grunge 2.0 is a new trend). Grunge isn't dead but it has grown up. Check out the photos below for inspiration on ways to bring this hi/low look into your space. Do you think this is a look you could incorporate or is it best left in the world of fashion? Already, doing it? Show a pic of your "Luxe Grunge" inspired look/space!

Elements of Luxe Grunge
  • 90's Grunge inspired
  • volume
  • painted silks
  • layered metallics
  • vintage and boho chic infusions
  • dusty, distressed or matted fabrics
  • floral and graphic prints
  • Colors: grey

This is a theme that can be easily translated from fashion into the home with:
  • metallic paints on walls and accent furniture pieces
  • layered textiles in window and floor coverings
  • vintage artifacts and antique accessories
  • upcycled, antique and industrial furnishings
  • distressed, patterned, and metallic upholstery
  • unexpected texture and color mash-ups in one space

WANT: Rihanna's Striped Blazer

I tried to avoid it. I didn’t want to like it, but after about the 50th time hearing Rihanna’s latest hit “What’s My Name,” Featuring Drake I was hooked. ( I know, I know. I'm super late, right?) I mean seriously obsessed. It's number 1 on the  'On the Go' playlist in my Ipod and must listen to it at least 5 times a day! What’s more, I  even loaded up the video on Youtube a few weeks ago. (Of course, I HAD to see it. I sensed that with the heavy Caribbean vibe in the music there was bound to be some fab wardrobing in the video!)

The video is cute. Rihanna rocks. More importantly I am living for that striped blazer, right now! As soon as I saw it I envisioned mixing and matching it with tanks, and denim, cute shorts. It’s such a strong statement piece. Now I don’t know if this new interest is a reflection of my own Caribbean roots or a manifestation of my love of stripes! It’s probably a bit of both!

Check out the Polyvore set below for information on brands, prices, and shopping locations so you that you might find a Striped Blazer of your very own.

{STYL'D} Behind the Brand: The Ladies of Lionette Designs by Noa Sade

Earlier this week I mentioned that I made a "spur of the moment" jewelry purchase from Lionette designs by Noa Sade. I really like this collection so I'm excited to be able to offer WLLC readers the "behind the brand" scoop!

I first became familiar with Lionette last month. I met Vanessa at the Professional Girls Night Out event. Her fervent passion for her company and product was one of the things I remember most about the encounter-that and the 4 sales (mine included) she made that night!

Lionette designs by Noa Sade is bold, exotic and enchanting, not unlike the two exceptional women at the helm of this flourishing brand. Vanessa Lee, who deals with Sales and Marketing, and Noa Sade, who handles Design/Product Development and Branding, were gracious enough to allow me to interview them about the success they've achieved since launching their brand in 2009, their partnership and the inspiration for the upcoming collection.

{STYL'D}: A "Wild" New Accessory Delivered To My Doorstep

Don't you love it when you get a package from UPS or FedEX? Even if you already know what it is, the rush of adrenaline I get when I'm tearing into a box shipped especially for me is definitely one of my favorite things! That's me. One of my favorite things is receiving surprise mail. Wait, let me clarify.
I really enjoy getting surprise "fun mail" from people I know or places I've shopped, not surprise bill mail or "hate mail" as my Dad calls it!

This week I received my latest purchase. A custom made "Madonna" necklace by Lionette NY in green. Created and designed by Noa Sade, it's beautiful and simple, yet striking.  I love that it's adjustable and can be worn in different ways, so I feel like I'm getting 2 necklaces in 1.

Of course, I consider this a "wardrobe investment," though my accountant would strongly disagree. I've heard and honestly believe best way to update your wardrobe, when you're trying not to blow your budget is with accessories and pops of color, and, jewelry is an accessory, right!?  I think that this chic, bauble will add a little polish to my Fall/Winter looks! What do you think?

The motto for the brand is "woman untamed." I always feel "fully dressed" when I'm wearing heels! I can't lie, I've definitely succumb to wearing flats more these days. I haven't been able to resist all those cool, cute and might I add comfy boots and ballet flats, but I have to say that when I really want that "WOW factor" I break out those heels! It's kind of amazing what a few inches can do. I walk taller. I feel more polished and confident, and super sexy. Now if designers could figure out how to make heels more comfortable without loosing the elements of style-we'd all have the best of both worlds, right? :)

  • What brands or items do you own that make you feel more daring, or "untamed" when you wear them?
  • Do you feel more confident in animal prints, walk taller in red?
  • Never leave home without those heels because they make you feel more regal and statuesque?
I'd love to hear from you!
Remember to stay tuned for the upcoming Profile with the lovely ladies of Lionette NY here on WLLC!

{STYL'D}: DIY Fabric Statement Necklace

This week I went a little "cray-cray" with a DIY project and made this funky, chic fabric necklace.
Inspired by Erica Domeseck, over at Psimadethis.com, and a colorful, African print dress I purchased at a flea market, I fashioned this inventive new neck piece! Do you like??

Girls And Their Curls

Click Title for Video:

Like many of have seen this cute Sesame Street clip on Youtube I was really touched and drawn to the message of self-love and acceptance. Our society puts so much pressure on women to be conform to a single standard of beauty and unfortunately for many of us, that standard is not only too high it's impossibly unattainable. As I watched this video I wondered how many doubts and struggles with self-esteem I might have avoided if I had been bombarded with more messages like this as a child.

Check out the video and read more commentary after the jump...

Bag In Time: Lady Bags for Fall 2010

Vintage inspired purses conjure up images of classic icons like Jacqueline Kennedy and Princess Diana or the upper crust "ladies who lunch" from the 20's and 30's.

Classic and polished, textured and patent finishes, hard-cased and soft quilting,  these handbags add a touch of expensive, sophistication to a look. These sweet, ladylike styles will be all the rage this Fall.

Check out the style round up below:

Shop: Bauble

I picked up a little gift for my self while in Vegas last month. It finally arrived today! I love the feeling of getting packages delivered. Of course I know what I'm getting. There's no surprise there, but I always feel like a little kid tearing into a birthday gift when it arrives. Wondering if it'll fit? Did I get the right size and color? Will it be as fabulous in person as it looked on my computer screen??

The thrill of "the wait" has got to be one of the biggest benefits of shopping online. Instant gratification aside, the rush of waiting on bought and paid for goods to arrived "signed, sealed, delivered" to your front door ranks right up there with first kiss butterflies in my book, but maybe that's just me.

Fashion's Night Out (FNO)

Here are pics from Friday's Fashion's Night Out Event here in NYC. This is the 2nd year of the international event and I have to believe this year's turn out was 3 times as strong as that of last year. The streets were packed with shoppers hoping to catch a glimpse of designers or celebrities and participate in the games, promotions and giveaways offered by the hundreds of participating stores.

My stops included Bergdorff Goodman, Henri Bendel, Saks 5th Avenue,  and Juicy Couture.

I met this woman at the make-up counters in Bergdorff's. I liked her look...

My shopping companions strike a pose!

Stylist Crystal Streets-head to toe fab! Look out for her show House of Glam on the Oxygen Channel...

NYC Fashion Week: "Project Runway" Finale Runway Show

Last week I was fortunate enough to score tickets to the taping of the Finale Show for one of "Project Runway," which took place last Wednesday during Mercedes Benz- New York Fashion Week.  As a fashion enthusiast I've been a fan for some time, though I have to admit I took a break during the lackluster "Bravo v.Lifetime/ 'We'll give L.A. a try'" season, but I digress.

The PR Spring/Summer 2010 show, along with many others took place at the prestigious, Lincoln Center, the much debated new home of Fashion Week. For those not familiar with the Lincoln Center complex, it's actually considered a "campus" with numerous buildings, including the Julliard School, conveniently located on 16.3 acres on the west side of NYC.

Heidi Klum, Michael Kors, and Nina Garcia were in attendance as judges with special guest judge Jessica Simpson. The show was incredible! Collections from the remaining 10 contestants on the show were presented in order to prevent spoilers of the actual network finale show which will announce the actual winner.

This is the Lobby area featuring lounges for Fashion Week sponsors.

Kim Crawford sponsored hand massage lounge.

Myself and friend Chimere who also attended the show.

Here's a taste of the looks seen that came down the runway (courtesy of The Cut at NY Magazine):

Andy: Inspired by a dream...

April: Inspired by dusty dolls at a tea party, then washed away...

Michael C.: Inspired by his friend...

Michael D.

Mondo: Dedicated to his spiritual advisor, his Grandmother...

Valerie: Rainbow Brite meets David Bowie

Casanova: Inspired by his Grandmother...

Christopher: Inspired by Roots, grace & romance...

Gretchen: Inspired by self discovery...

Ivy: Inspired by her home islands of Hawaii...

So who do you think will end up in the "Top 3"? Any guesses on who might be this season's winner?? My top 3 include Valerie, Gretchen and Mondo, but I'll definitely be tuning in during the coming weeks to see who makes the cut.
