Though it is on my bucket list of things to do before I make my exit, I have not yet had the immense pleasure of a visit to Paris nor any of it's notable merchant markets. Living vicariously through the buyers at 1stdibs I was able to collect an array of covetable items to share.
Judging by the sheer size and assortment I would say that a trip to Paris Flea could potentially mean absolute doom for my meager financials, but I'd be willing to take the risk and test the theory-have passport, will travel!

What "Luxe Grunge" Looks Like
"Luxe Grunge." Sounds a bit like an oxymoron, right? That was my reaction too. Anyone who is familiar with the epic fashion movement made popular in the 90's by the likes of musicians, like Kurt Cobain and celebs like Johnny Depp, Kate Moss, knows that the look was, at the time, the epitome of frugality and distress.
Grunge was far more than a fashion trend. It was a rugged lifestyle adopted by the angst ridden, youth sub-culture, often associated with: beanies, "thrift shop chic", alternative rock music, skateboarding (love a skaterboi), the term "Gen X," and what appeared to be an aversion to soap and shampoo.
It was one of the most significant trickle up fashion movements since the 80's Punk statement. This style revolution was the catalyst for my interest in thrifting (for clothes I'd actually wear in public), upcycling: crafting clothes and jewelry out of sweaters and building materials (ask anyone from my high school class- I was the resident weirdo), layering (my secret weapon for creating a near season-less wardrobe), and all things Nirvana, Green Day and Smashing Pumpkins. I hope I'm not dating myself here. No matter, "Age ain't nothing but a number." Thankfully, my encounter with this lifestyle planted the seed for a lifetime of exploration of, and an affinity for "the other," the counter to mainstream, the alternative.
Quick Recap:
The good news is the look, or key elements of it, are again becoming significant in mainstream fashion and design (yay!). Of course, as with any resurgence, it has been re-branded with a fresh moniker for mass consumption (also a great marketing tool to attract the newbies, who will no doubt assume Grunge 2.0 is a new trend). Grunge isn't dead but it has grown up. Check out the photos below for inspiration on ways to bring this hi/low look into your space. Do you think this is a look you could incorporate or is it best left in the world of fashion? Already, doing it? Show a pic of your "Luxe Grunge" inspired look/space!

MAD Props!
Designers, decorators and shoppers addicted to home furnishings-Be warned! You might loose your mind the first time you visit Film Biz Prop shop. Located in an 11,000 sqft. (yea, I said it. 11,00 square feet of stuff!) warehouse in Long Island City, this prop house features handpicked items leftover from film, tv, and play sets across the nation. Available for rent or purchase these goods vary in price, so budgets be damned-shop on!
The other cool thing about Film Biz Prop shop is it’s a not for profit organization. They’re committed to ensuring proper disposal of unwanted materials in the film making industry. Normally most of the furniture, and other props are tossed in the dumpster after the completion of a project. Eventually the stuff ends up in a landfill, which causes a whole list of other problems for the environment including the release of toxic gases.
I generally don’t mind recycling gently used furnishing for my home (Not like beds or couches-bed bugs freak me out). It’s cheaper and really less wasteful (one girl’s trash is another girl’s treasure). You’d be surprised what a little soap, elbow grease and a coat of paint can do! Generally, I rely on Craigslist, antique stores, and garage sales, but this place definitely makes the list of resources for future projects.
What do you think? Ever recycled ‘hand me down’ furnishings for your home? Where do you shop? What has been your most treasured find?
Black and White Photo $25.
Stainless Mesh Bar Stool $75.
Asian Slate Table $145.

CREATE: If These Walls Could Talk
Wall paper. It's unique, vintage, contemporary, elegant, dramatic, whimsical, and I love it! It's one of my favorite decor elements!
Check out these styles from FlavorPaper.com:
Wall paper has come a long way since busy, bland and boring, fruit and flower patterns. There are even removable options for renters or people like myself, who are not ready to commit or are unwilling to succumb to the time consuming process of installation and removal of said "pretty papers."
I've been on the hunt for removal wall paper for my living room, which is in desperate need of a boost. I came across Tempaper.com during my last cyber-stalking, I mean cyber-shopping session. They have colorful, retro prints and patterns that, according to the website, won't ruin your walls or paint. The prices weren't too bad either, and that's very important because wall paper can get pricey. I've seen rolls with prices $200, and unless you live in a shoe box or maybe a New York City studio, 1 roll won't get you too far.
I requested samples from Tempaper.com last Friday and received my packet today. I was hoping to get a variety of their patterns and colors because I wanted to see them all in person and on my wall, unbeknownst to me they only send you 1 sample per $4 order. So I'll have to work on sampling the other patterns later.
Sherwin Williams also offers temporary options. They have a variety of amazing patterns that I love but I've heard some buzz on blogs that makes me the "take down" may not be as "effortless" as the website claims. Take a look at the Easy Change collections here.
I'm determined to find a colorful, fix for my semi-chocolate walls so I'll keep you posted on my finds and of course post the final results of my crafty project. In the meantime, feel free to share any "wall dressing" ideas you have or other resources for temporary wall paper. If you've tried temporary wall paper and loved it or hated it please feel free to share your experience.

For Inspiration >> Craft * Decor * Shop
are some shots of products, ideas, and designs I came across during this week's internet crawl. I'm constantly surfing the net and often I come upon really special items that catch my eye and inspire me to: try something "crazy," alter my perception, or create ways to attain the life and lifestyle I want now (even with my budget boundaries).
This week my mind has been on:
- repainting the vintage dresser I purchased earlier this year for my bedroom
- sprucing up my bathroom with a fun shower curtain
- new ideas to create favors and improve design for my event planning and design company
- adding "sparkle" to my wardrobe with accessories

DIY Home: Tools of the Trade
Home owner or renter, woman or man, there are a few tools every home should have. Want to decorate your home with art work, hang a mirror, install a floating shelf ?
You'll save money and time in the long run by doing it yourself-the right way. I've compiled a short list of the basic tools, that I use the most in my home. Tools can vary in price, depending on quality, but most of the items here are relatively inexpensive. The Black & Decker cordless drill actually was the most costly at around $60.
1. Picture Hangers-"Ooks" Professional Picture Hangers are my faves, but any brand will do. In desperate times a good old nail may do the trick!
2. Power Drill- Elbow grease optional. Great for tightening and loosening screws with ease! I bought a cordless style drill because it was smaller and easier to store. Since I'm not tethered to the wall I can do projects anywhere in my home.
3. Drill Bits-mostly for drilling holes into surfaces; This is a "must-have" item for any "Home DIY-er."
Not So Common Knowledge: Drills and bits are sold separately. You'll need to purchase both in order to work on projects with varying surfaces.
4. Hammer
5. Stud Finder- I haven't had to use this much since my building is older and my walls are plaster but other DIYers advise on using one when mounting heavy items to the wall. It helps you locate the "studs, " or weight bearing beams in the wall.
6. Measuring Tape
